sailors first sighted a group of islands naming them 'Los Pajoros' or 'the birds' as they resembled a flock of tiny birds in flight. In the seventeenth century the islands were renamed The Grenadines by pirates who used the sheltered bays to hide their ships and treasure. The Grenadines were later utilised by European planters to grow sugar until the discovery in the nineteenth century that sugar beet would grow in Europe. Mustique's sugar plantations were soon abandoned and eventually swallowed up by wild jungle leaving only the sugar mill at 'Endeavor' and its 'Cotton House.'

Mustique was eventually purchased in 1958 by Lord Glenconner under whose guidance the island began to thrive once again. HRH The Princess Margaret accepted his generous gift of a ten-acre plot of land as a wedding present in 1960 on which she built a magnificent residence, 'Les Jolies Eaux.' In 1989 Mustique island was transformed from a family estate into a community of people dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the island for generations to come.

Today Mustique retains its natural beauty and tranquility, protecting the environment and offering guests one of the most secure and pristine islands in the world.

Beaches of Mustique

Mustique is a picturesque and secluded 1,400 acre island surrounded by nine beaches of pure white sand, with gently swaying coconut palms and warm turquoise waters.

Macaroni Beach is perhaps the most famous of Mustique's beaches and is situated on the east coast of the island. Other popular beaches on the Atlantic or Caribbean are Endeavour, Lagoon, L'Ansecoy and Simplicity, several of which have picnic hut facilities. Mustique lies 18 miles south of St. Vincent in a collection of unspoilt islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Mustique encompasses only 1,400 acres, measuring 1.5 miles wide by 3 miles long of rolling hills and lush terrain with stretches of deserted white sand beaches surrounded by protected reefs and clear aquamarine seas.

The exclusive island of Mustique is at the northern tip of The Grenadines bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It is part of the Lesser Antilles that are, in turn, part of the Windward Islands of the Caribbean. Mustique is reached by air from North America and Europe through Barbados, St. Vincent, Canouan, Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico or Trinidad.

Mustique is owned by The Mustique Company which is responsible for the well-being and development of the entire island, ensuring that its original character is carefully preserved.

The Mustique Company acts as a custodian for the entire island. It is responsible for the waters surrounding the Mustique for one thousand yards offshore as well as its wide variety of unique flora and fauna.

Mustique has a wide range of recreational activities to enjoy and many heavenly beaches where one can totally relax, sunbathe and picnic. Walking and horse riding trails are in abundance on the island and jeeps, motorcycles and mountain bikes may be rented from Mustique Mechanical Services.

A trip to Britannia Bay, the focal point of the island, houses the famous Basilâs Bar & Restaurant, Johanna Banana Cafe, Sweetie Pie Bakery, the Food Store, Fish Market, Treasure Boutiques for designer clothes shopping, Basilâs Boutique for beach wear and Across Forever for Balinese furnishings.
